Operation Rolling Pin - The Liberation and The Battle that followed!
Special Dispatch from Dusty Gulch
By Roderick Whiskers McNibble, Chief Investigative Correspondent
The Cybertruck disappeared into the dust.
Back in Dusty Gulch, nobody spoke.
The WDP gave a faint, uneven thrum. Dusty McFookit was concerned. The future of his beloved town - our beloved town - was at stake. Would Feline Force Five succeed in their daring mission? Maureen watched the road. Trevor’s titanium knees clicked softly as he shifted his weight.
The sonic rolling pin was in Honklander hands, but for how much longer? .
And a question that the entire town was thinking but not asking out loud was " Who trained the Feline Force Five? "
Maureen and Mavis looked at each other and nodded as if a message had been conveyed between them. Maureen was the first to speak. It was time to tell the truth.
" The trainer was and is The Sixth Cat. Known to you as The Boundary Rider. "
I could not believe my ratty ears. To think: I had sat with him that night on a lonely outback night. He had written for the Dusty Gulch Gazette and seemed to have a deep understanding of world affairs. Strange for a reclusive tabby.
It all suddenly made sense.
Mavis continued. " The Boundary Rider was a member of a Special Secret Feline division of field operatives in several of his nine lives. " she explained. " He is known as BRS in the agency. His initials. Boundary. Rider. Special. "
Mavis paused, as though deciding how much she was permitted to reveal.
"There are older files," she said. "Much older. Some of them go back to the Second World War. There are whispers that BRS was attached to Z Special Unit and had a paw in Operation Platypus in Borneo."
I nearly dropped my pencil.
"Operation Platypus?"
Mavis gave me a knowing look.
"Let's just say that some of the intelligence gathered before the troops arrived may have come from an unusually observant member of the local feline population."
She said no more.

I was scribbling frantically as she spoke. It seemed that the Boundary Rider had a history far greater than I imagined. No one notices a stray cat.
He was once falsely accused of killing innocent scorpions and snakes on one particularly dangerous mission and returned to the Australian Outback as a reclusive tabby who had rejected society. However, he had been called back to duty and had been secretly training Feline Force Five for years. But on whose orders? I hardly dared to speculate.
Not even Dusty McFookit was aware that the 3 am zoomies were late night training exercises under the firm tutelage of BRS. Pennies were dropping faster than Prentis Penjani's election promises.

The sonic rolling pin. Maureen explained, was the metronome of the WDP - the instrument that kept its rhythm steady and Dusty Gulch safe. Without it, the machine was losing its beat.
As most of us already suspected.
And the Feline Force Five were going in to get it back. Under the leadership of none other than The Boundary Rider aka BRS. Special Agent Extraordinaire.
This was stunning news, yet, I barely had time to digest its gravity because things were at fever pitch in Dusty Gulch.
The whole town waited. Binoculars sold out at the Gulch Emporium. I purchased a drone and was able to observe the attack in real time.
The Cybertruck came to a halt beyond the perimeter fence at Honklander HQ. It was dark by the time they reached the base.
For a moment, nothing moved.
Then five shadows slipped into the darkness. Mother stayed behind in the cybertruck to handle emergency procedures.

Boundary Rider led. Missy and Ginger followed close behind, with Puds and Fugly covering the rear.
The Honklander compound stood silent beneath the moon. Floodlights swept the yard in slow, methodical arcs. Beyond the main building, a guard crossed between two sheds, his shadow stretching across the concrete.
Boundary Rider waited until the light passed.
Then he moved.
The others followed.
They reached the service entrance just as the guard turned back. Missy flattened herself against the wall. Ginger disappeared beneath a parked trailer. Puds and Fugly slipped through the narrow gap between the bins and the building.

Boundary Rider reached the door.
Locked, but for him, a no brainer. Easily unlocked.
He examined the hinge, then the frame. A faint pulse came through the receiver. The rolling pin was close.
The guard's footsteps returned.
Boundary Rider eased the door open.
Inside, the corridor smelled of dust, machine oil, and stale sandwiches. A strip of light shone beneath the door at the far end. Somewhere in the distance, a radio was blasting out a song about Prentis Penjani being a houso.
They moved along the wall.
A sudden clatter echoed behind them.
Everyone froze.
A Honklander emerged from a side room carrying a clipboard. He stopped, frowned at the corridor, then continued towards the stairs.
Boundary Rider waited until the footsteps faded.
The receiver pulsed again.
The Boundary Rider stayed postioned at the door to keep watch. Every second counted.
The others reached the cabinet. By the time Ginger lifted the rolling pin from the cabinet, the first grey light of dawn was creeping over the compound.
The cabinet was steel, bolted to the floor, and humming faintly. The sonic rolling pin lay inside, its handle wrapped in Maureen's familiar tea towel.

Ginger reached for the rolling pin.
A red light blinked above the cabinet.
The alarm began to sound.
Boundary Rider sprang into action. Missy and Puds blocked the corridor. Fugly pulled the fire door shut behind them. Ginger grasped the rolling pin tightly.
The cabinet's hum stopped.
Across the building, lights flashed on.
The Five ran.
They burst through the service entrance into the yard. Floodlights snapped towards them. A guard shouted. The Cybertruck's doors opened.
Mother had the engine running. Puds leapt inside to give backup with Mother. The other four raced behind, Ginger clasping the rolling pin inside his jacket.
Boundary Rider reached the vehicle last. He leapt inside as the truck surged forward, scattering gravel beneath its tyres.
Behind them, the Honklander compound erupted into confusion.

The first gunshot cracked across the compound.
Then another.
By now, dawn had come.
Trevor heard the gunshots from the edge of the Gulch.
He was moving before Dusty could call his name.
The Cybertruck’s receiver was alive with frantic pulses. The sonic rolling pin had been liberated, but the Feline Force Five were trapped beyond the perimeter, and the Honklanders had opened fire.
Trevor bounded towards the compound.
At the fence, the cats were already under attack. Mutant drop bears - products of the Honklanders’ secret laboratory - descended from the trees, claws extended and fangs bared. Above them, a flock of mutant magpies divebombed the retreat.
The Cybertruck’s rooftop aerial deflection shield sprang into action. A shimmering field caught the worst of the incoming assault, but the shield was struggling to hold.

Trevor planted himself between the attackers and the cats.
His titanium knees hummed.
The drop bears turned on him.
They knew where his strength lay. They went for his knees, snapping and snarling, their fangs aimed at the joints. Trevor staggered under the assault, his sweat soaking through his tactical vest.
“Two of you! Cover Trevor!” Boundary Rider shouted. “You two, with me! Mother - stay with the cybertruck!”
Fugly and Ginger broke towards the Cybertruck . Boundary Rider followed, moving fast.
Behind them, Missy and Puds fought like fury, hissing and snarling, drawing the attackers away from Trevor. Mother maintained aerial protection from within the cab of the cybertruck, paws franticallty sending out instructions to the roof shield.
The mutant magpies struck again.
Trevor ducked. A drop bear landed across his shoulders. Another lunged for his knees.
Ginger grabbed the sonic rolling pin from within his jacket and thumped it down on the attacker who was now gnawing visciously at one of Trevor's knees. Then the rolling pin connected.
Its signal reached Trevor’s titanium joints.
The hum deepened.
Trevor straightened.
The drop bears recoiled.
And then Trevor went to work.
His titanium knees drove into the attackers with the precision of a martial-arts master after a yum cha banquet and a feed of blowfish and shark-fin soup. Drop bears went flying. Mutant magpies scattered. The remaining attackers fled into the early morning light.

The cats scrambled aboard the Cybertruck to join Mother.
Boundary Rider was last in.
The vehicle surged forward, its shield flickering as it broke through the perimeter.
Behind them, Honklander Headquarters disappeared into the dust.
Trevor stood on the open roof, knees humming, sweat shining beneath the emerging sunlight.
The sonic rolling pin was safe.
And Dusty Gulch had just acquired another legend. The Boundary Rider. Fit to stand tall with Trevor in any battles yet to come.
This is Roderick ( Whiskers ) McNibble signing out on what has been a day that will go down in Dusty Gulch history. It will be a big night at the Dusty Dingo - as long as we don't get a plague of mutant locusts tomorrow.... stay twitchy folks. You never know what is around the corner.
